If you need binaries for a different platform, you’ll have to build them from source (explained in this FAQ). The binaries require Mac OS X 10.4 or higher and have been created and tested on 10.6 (x86 architecture).
You only need to additionally install the SDL framework(1.2.14), which is required for MAME & MESS anyway on that platform. It originally started as one of the first front ends for UNIX. SDL MAME is much easier to use with a good front end.
QMC2 is a GUI for use with SDL MAME and MESS.
